“Nothing can ruin a great massage faster than a weak finish"-Denise Willinger
Have you ever experienced a massage that seemed really great-until the end? You're feeling blissful on the table. The pressure is perfect. You feel completely relaxed and then suddenly, your therapist removes his or her hands and says "That's it. We're done."
Your brain and body instantly try to figure out what just happened. There was no transition to help you understand that the experience was coming to a conclusion. The best massages have a defined beginning, middle and ending (and no, I don’t mean a “happy ending”!) There are a few techniques that can be used at the end of a massage to help the client transition to a more wakeful state-without leaving them feeling like a less than satisfying experience.
The last few massages I've had just ended suddenly and I have to admit-I don't understand why a massage therapist would end a session so abruptly. There are some great techniques to help transition the body and brain so you keep that blissful state longer. It’s easy to incorporate Energy Healing techniques into your massage sessions. Read on to learn how to incorporate different Energy Healing techniques and leave your client feeling as if this was the BEST MASSAGE EVER! Added bonus-you leave the session feeling like you had a healing treatment, too!
Before retiring as a Massage Therapist, I used Energy Healing techniques with every single customer who graced my table. I always ground and protect myself energetically prior to a session. Actually, I do this every morning, too.
If you’ve ever felt your energy drop while working on a client, or felt as if you were experiencing their emotions, grounding and protecting yourself will be crucial to help prevent burnout and exhaustion when working. Believe it or not, I burned out in my business THREE TIMES! Learning Quantum Touch helped me to get my energy back, and prevent burning out again, too.
The most important thing I learned was to ground, center and protect myself before I touched the client.
Use this technique before a Massage or Healing session, when you’ll be in a large group of people or anytime your energy level drops!
Here’s a simple grounding and protecting ritual you can use daily:
Before learning Quantum Touch, I was a deep tissue girl, all the way! I loved being able to work deeply on the muscles of the neck and back and get great results for the client. Doing deep work required using my body weight to do the work, but sometimes I still felt really tired at the end of my day.
When I learned to move energy through my own body into my hands using Quantum Touch techniques, it was a game changer for my practice. I realized change could take place in the tissues much more quickly and with less force if I ran energy into my hands with the intention to “melt” the tissues.
Try this next time you have a stubborn knot that isn’t budging with your elbow. First, gently place your elbow on the trigger point. Don't use any pressure yet, just let your elbow rest there. Slowly take a deep breath imagining you are bringing life force energy in through the top of your head. Set an intention that this energy will “melt” the stubborn knot. AS you exhale, imagine the energy going down through your arm, into your elbow.
Take another deep breath and again, bring the energy down the arm, into the elbow and directly in the client-as you very slowly put more body weight into the elbow.
Be sure to check in with the client to be sure you’re not causing any pain. Using this technique will help you go much deeper without pain to the client
One thing I learned early in my career was how to use polarity at the end of my session. This technique helps to leave the client in that blissful state, feeling balanced and complete. If you’ve taken reiki or cranio sacral classes, you understand the energy flow throughout the body. This simple polarity move helps to create an energy circuit. It’s simple but very effective. You can even practice it on yourself.

Place your left hand on the center of the forehead, on the “third eye”. Place your right hand at the base of the skull. Breathe slow and deep and wait to feel the pulse. As you hold this move, you are helping the energy flow through the client's body.
I visualize the circuit of energy, through the client-down from the base of the skull, through the right side of their body, up the left side of the body and back to your left hand.
Now take it even further. Move the energy through YOUR body. From the left hand, into your body down the left side, back up the right side, into your right hand and back to your client.
As you breathe, imagine this beautiful, healing life force energy is balancing, cleansing and healing anything that no longer serves you or the client.
To finish the massage, rest your fingertips on the clients temples, again, feeling the pulsation of energy. Softly say “ Thank you so much. I’ll let you relax and will meet you outside the door in a few moments”
Once you learn to end the massage with a beautiful energy circuit, you will understand that every massage is a spiritual experience. When you can harness the power of oneness and share it with your client, a massage session becomes a mystical experience instead of a clinical one.
Try these techniques and let me know what you think! If you want to know more about how to incorporate Energy Healing in to your massage and bodywork sessions, you can contact me at hello@denisewillinger.com
